Recyclability and Compostability

99% recovery rate of available fibers

PaperFoam was already certified Biobased and Home compostable as well as Industrial compostable. Recently we asked UL Environment, a US based institute focusing on recyclability claims, to check the paper recyclability of PaperFoam products. This to endorse our recyclability and compostability claim.

The outcome was very positive: “Paperfoam Trays were validated to be recyclable with a 99% recovery rate of available fibers, which constitute 12% of total product weight.” Read more about the actual claim here.

In Europe composting waste is a very Eco-friendly way of transferring waste into nutrient rich soil to, for example, grow crops on. To check if this was also possible with PaperFoam we reached out to Vinçotte. This independent research institute in Belgium is well respected when it comes to checking whether a product is compostable or not.

Vinçotte certifies producers and products according to the European standards EN 13432 “Requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation – Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging”. This standard defines the characteristics that a material must possess in order to be considered compostable. And also ASTM D6866 that is used as a standard testing method to determine the biobased content of products.

We already achieved the highest “OK biobased” rating (4stars), This means PaperFoam contains the highest possible percentage of biobased material. After the biobased here certification we applied for the industrial compostability certification, “OK compost”. This And now we also have the certification for home compostability, called: “OK compost HOME”. Read more about these Vinçotte certifications here.

Since we are always looking to validate our claims of being one of the most environmentally friendly materials in the world we will definitely be expanding our list of certificates in the future. We are very satisfied with our recyclability and compostability certificates and hope that this will push more companies towards using a sustainable packaging.
